Plum Sorbet

William Carlos Williams wrote a lot of famously short and concise poems, his most famous of which is probably “So much depends upon a red wheelbarrow.” One of my favorite’s is his work about plums, written in the form of a note left for his wife. The recipe below is a take on his “cold” and “sweet” plums by turning them into a frozen sorbet.

The Poem

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

The Recipe

Ingredients:

Ice Cream Machine*

2 1/2 cups of sliced plums, pits removed
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
Pinch of salt
1 tablespoon of Grand Marnier (optional)

Directions:

  1. Place the sliced plums, sugar, lemon juice, and salt in a blender and purée until very smooth. Push the plum puree through a fine mesh sieve to catch and large pieces of skin and discard them.
  2. Mix the Grand Marnier to the purée just before churning. Place the purée in an ice cream machine and churn according to instructions, for approximately 25 minutes.
  3. Serve immediately or place in an air tight container and put in the freezer for two hours to firm up.

  1. First off, I just wanna say that I love the incorporation of your love of poetry with your love of cooking, and found an interesting way to combine the two together with your poem inspired edibles! This is simply just so creative. I have a suggestion if I may. How about you make another tab in the blog next to “About the Blog” that incorporates all the recipes you’ve uploaded into a single page.

    1. Thanks for the idea! I was definitely looking for some way to streamline the recipes, so I’ll keep that idea in mind.
